Phase 1: Discovery, Site Analysis & Vision Mapping
Every Designs by Dharshan project begins with a rigorous Discovery and Site Analysis session. Our design leads walk the site with the client, observing sun angles, drainage paths, existing trees, grade changes, and the home’s architectural language so the outdoor work speaks in the same dialect as the structure.
During this phase we review surveys, analyze microclimates, catalogue exterior materials, interview the family about how they actually live outdoors, and confirm zoning/permit requirements. The output is a Vision Brief — the north star that keeps the entire sanctuary specific to that homeowner.
Phase 2: Concept Development & Landscape Architect Collaboration
With the Vision Brief approved, our collaborative team of interior/exterior designers, landscape architects, structural consultants, and horticulture specialists sketches multiple concept schemes. We explore covered lounge anchors, fireplace focal axes, and cellular zones, then refine the Master Concept Plan with the client.
Landscape architects engineer grading, retaining walls, pergola footings, and integrate structural planting as we define the outdoor room hierarchy: covered lounge, fireplace focal zone, dining terrace, layered planting perimeter, and the transition corridor into the home.
Phase 3: Material Palette Curation
We treat outdoor materials with the same care as bespoke interiors. Limestone, granite, bluestone, quartzite, large-format porcelain panels, and thermally modified decking are selected for durability and luxury. Softscape palettes use structural evergreens, ornamental grasses, statement perennials, layered groundcovers, and seasonal bulbs tuned to Zone 6b so the sanctuary feels alive across seasons.
Phase 4: Covered Lounge & Fireplace Architecture
Covered lounges are designed as architectural statements: timber-frame pavilions, motorized louvered pergolas, or modern flat-roof cabanas with integrated lighting. Fireplaces act as sculptural hearths, engineered with licensed gas work, precise firebox sizing, and sculpted surrounds that anchor conversation zones.
Phase 5: Scripting Lighting Scenes
Lighting is choreographed like theater. Architectural accent, ambient field, task, and feature layers combine with pre-set scenes — Welcome, Dinner, Late Night — programmed into smart lighting systems and presented in a dedicated client walk-through so the homeowner controls the mood from day one.
Phase 6: Interior–Exterior Continuity & Design Mandate
We drive interior–exterior continuity through flush thresholds, matched material palettes, aligned ceiling heights, and integrated smart controls so the outdoor sanctuary feels like an extension of the indoor great room. We treat the backyard as a fully realized room, not an afterthought.
